Athletics: Few Compete in Five Miler

By Guest Contributors • Oct 20th, 2008 • Category: Sport

Saturday 27th September 2008 – White Horse 5 Miler, Sandhurst Lane, Gloucester

The first venture for any team athletes was a low key affair to say the least!  A very small field of around 40 athletes turned up to run in near perfect conditions.

The race was a 5:30pm start, so with clear skies and no wind, the temperature was just right.

Although, in the end, only myself and Jack (Spencer) ran, there was a strong support contingent of ex-fixtures sec. James ‘Rambo’ Miller, current fixtures sec. Lauren ‘yet to get a nickname’ Tolmie and former press officer and current team member (and legend of course) Gavin ‘Trigger’ Cotter.

I was first home for the team in a time of 28:39, which placed me 6th man in the race, and 7th overall.  Losing to women is not somethingI pride myself on but she (Wendy Nicholls) is international standard, so I think I can be excused!  The Jaffa Cakes went down well…with Lauren anyway!

Jack also ran a solid race, coming home 16th overall and first Junior Man (U20).  This also got him a prize – more jaffa cakes!  I’m not sure on the time yet but it was something around 33 minutes.

The next BIG race is our team event – the Gloucestershire XC League on Saturday 11th October, in Bourton.  Transport arrangements will be sorted out nearer the time and it is a day time race.
