Women’s Basketball: Great Start to Season for Tigers

By Guest Contributors • Oct 20th, 2008 • Category: Sport

The Tigers have had a busy first week in competition, competing against 2 very strong teams. We travelled to Worcester for a friendly against  the very intimidating uni team. We then welcomed Dynamo from Bristol on Thursday and held our first Webba (local league) game.

The first of October marked the first official game of the season for The Tigers, a friendly against Worcester, a worthy competitor always known for having a very strong side. But this was no deterrent for the high spirited Tigers who were determined to start the season off with a win. After finally locating the changing rooms, the team seemed unstoppable. Although obviously nervous, the team warmed up in high spirits and seemed prepared for the tough match ahead.

Despite losing the tip the Tigers played hard defence to ensure that Worcester could not get anywhere near the basket and ensuring that no points were scored. Although after a tough first minute Worcester managed to score the first basket of the match, the Tigers quickly recovered and soon started to catch up with the first points for Gloucestershire scored by Jess Addington. The first half of the match was gruelling for both teams, Worcester were not expecting such a strong performance from Gloucestershire and although Worcester were still a few points ahead the game looked like it could go either way. The second half showed no dip in determination from Gloucestershire, the team played harder than ever.

Unfortunately for The Tigers a win was not meant to be, the final score was Worcester 58 - Glos 36. However, this was far from a disappointment for the team. Having known Worcester as a strong competitor the outcome of the match was still cause for celebration. Hopefully the team will continue to play well and possibly a win against Worcester is on the horizon for the coming season. The man of the match was Claire Moran and Top Scorer of the match was Jess Addington.

As we said goodbye to Wednesday’s extremely tough game, we welcomed another one the very next day. Tigers were once again the under dogs before this game and Dynamo thought they had it in the bag. But with a promising first performance in BUCS and a few strong WEBBA players and freshers stepping into help, Tigers showed what skill they really can produce. It was a tough game, but with a few coaching tips and determination the Tigers pulled through to win 54-40! Top scorer of the game was Jessica Addington, with an impressive 15 points.  What a great start to the season for the Tigers! It’s going to be an interesting game to watch next Sunday when Tigers play Dynamo again.

Keep up the good work Tigers, a great season is ahead and we couldn’t have asked for a better start!
